e-Articles (Chapter 10)

Here are the titles of some full-length research articles that illustrate concepts discussed in this chapter. To view any article on-line, simply click on its title.

Comparison of Azelastine Nasal Spray and Oral Ebastine in Treating Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis

Illustrates the use of an independent-samples t-test to compare 2 samples in terms of mean pre-post change scores. As indicated in the fourth paragraph of the section entitled "Patients and Methods," this t-test was conducted in a two-sided fashion.

Evaluating the Effectiveness of 2 Educational Interventions in Family Practice

In this study, several pairs of sample means are compared via t-tests. Some of these are "unpaired t-tests" (because the two sets of scores come from independent samples) while others are "paired t-tests" (because the two sets of scores come from the sample folks being measured twice, in Phase 1 and then again in Phase 2). See the last paragraph of "Methods" and the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth paragraphs of "Results."

Enhancing Psychomotor Skill Development Through Use of Mental Practice

Illustrates the use of an independent-samples t-test to compare the mean gain scores of two groups (treatment and control) that were measured on 2 occasions. Actually, this kind of test was performed 6 times, because the comparison groups were each subdivided in different ways with t-tests used to compare the subgroups.

Prescribing of Antidepressants in Cardiovascular Disease: A Study Using a Computerised General Practice Data Base

Shows how a confidence interval on the difference between the means of 2 samples "says" the same thing as a t-test that compares the 2 means. See (1) the second and third sentences of the last paragraph of the "Results" section and (2) the third row of numbers in Table 2.

The Current and Future Outcomes of Interpersonal Social Interactions: The Views of Students With Behavioral Disorders

Illustrates the use of confidence intervals to test a null hypothesis involving a single mean. See (1) the last 2 sentences in the second paragraph of the "Results" section and (2) Note #3 beneath Tables 2 and 3.
