ANCOVA's Underlying Assumptions

Whenever you consider research claims based on ANCOVA, check to see whether the researcher says anything about the statistical assumptions on which the analysis was based. Upgrade your evaluation of the research report when there is expressed concern over the assumption of equal regression slopes, the assumption of a linear relationship between the covariate and dependent variables, and the assumption that scores on the covariate variable are not influenced by the independent variable. If these assumptions are not discussed, you should downgrade your evaluation of the study.
